On a mission to see the largest arch dam of the country

Road trip to Idukki

This is the entry point if you want to visit Idukki dam. You can only visit Idukki dam by going to the Cheruthoni dam and then visit both Cheruthoni and Idukki dams.

Visitors can walk from Cheruthoni dam to the arch dam of idukki, and then also visit the Vysali caves in between these two dams. We even climbed on top of &quot;Kuravan Mala&quot;, one of the mountains that connects Idukki arch dam.&nbsp;

The dam is very large, visitors are not allowed to bring any electronic items inside. There is a cloak room available where you can keep your stuffs. The whole stretch combining Cheruthoni dam, Vysali caves and Idukki dam covers around 6 kilometres back and forth, golf cart like buggies are available if you are not interested to walk.

Cheruthoni Dam

None of these photos were taken from Idukki dam but in an around the area of it as photography is prohibited inside the dam complex. If you are interested to visit the dam, the entry point is at Cheruthoni dam from where you can walk and checkout Cheruthoni dam, Vysali caves and Idukki dam.

The dam itself is humengous. So large and tall supporting a huge volume of water spread over sixty square kilometers. You can also see the tunnel that is cut through the mountain &quot;kurathi mala&quot;. We had a great time exploring the dam and it&#39;s areas.

Idukki Dam

This viewpoint shows you the catchment area of Idukki reservoir complex that consists of idIduk, Cheruthoni and Kulamavu dams. The view is very pretty but unfortunately it was a bit hazy while we visited. You can walk around the area here to get different views of the reservoir. There are some small peaks to climb and tea estates lay right near to the area.

The access to the spot from the main road is a bit tricky, through unpaved roads. Probably SUV&#39;s have a better time going up through it. We we&#39;re motorcycling up and it was difficult to reach, but not impossible.

Calvari Mount View Point

This waterfall lies right on the road side enroute Munnar and is a popular spot for taking a break. It&#39;s a big waterfall, however it doesn&#39;t get the attention it deserves due to it&#39;s location(who wants to visit a relatively smaller waterfall when there are larger ones in munnr ;)).

The roadside is lined with variety of shops selling teas, handicrafts, local delicasies etc.. you can walk near to the waterfall and stand behind it too if you would like.&nbsp;
