The Tjonger Valley is an open biotope with a unique flora and fauna between Mildam and Makkinga . Meadow birds such as curlew, black-tailed godwit, oystercatcher, ruff, lark, lapwing, yellow wagtail and partridge nested here until the beginning of the 21st century.
