The old town (Altstadt) of Heidelberg is unique as it was one of the rare cities in Germany that was not destroyed during World War II. The outline of the city is medieval. You can go through the small alleys and look at the different unique buildings that now mostly hosts shops, restaurants and pubs. At the end of the old town you can look up to the old Heidelberg castle on the hill. Outstanding sights are the old bridge, the Karl's gate and the Heiliggeistkirche church. Take your time strolling through the streets and have a rest in one of the picturesque cafe's.
