If you only want to visit one museum while in Kerala, visit this one. The Kerala museum consists of three buildings that show you different aspects of Kerala's culture and rich history. The first building gives you an excellent overview of the past 800 years of Kerala including culture, the arts, religion, science and foreign and domestic politics. The history is shown through manequins/ life size dolls that are reenacting a scene from the past and embody important personalities that took part in shaping the state. As you move from scene to scene an audio tape is narrating what you see and gives you the historical details. The second buildings exhibits smaller dolls in national costumes from different parts of India. These include tribes as well. The third building is home to an extensive and very impressive art collection that is well worth visiting. The museum is privately run and was initiated, financed and founded by the late Madhavan Nayar. He was in the shrimp export business. If you are in town for longer, you can participate in one of the many art or dance workshops at the foundation. The venue also hosts a film club that screens movies twice a month. Entrance fee was 150Rs and it was the first time that I did not have to pay extra for being a foreigner.
