About Limburg

The Geleenbeek is a stream in the south of the Dutch province of Limburg that is part of the Meuse river basin. The partly canalized stream originates in Benzenrade and flows into the Maas at Stevensweert under the name Oude Maas. The stream valley with numerous side streams has been designated a Natura 2000 area and is largely located in the National Landscape of South Limburg.

The Gemeentegrot, in the Dutch Limburg town of Valkenburg is a limestone quarry where marl was extracted until the 1950s.The marl originated in the time when South Limburg was still a sea. This also explains the large amount of shells that are still in the marl. The Romans were already busy mining marl in the Municipal Cave, among others. The cave was mapped in the 1960s by G. Essers. Works of art in the form of drawings or sculptures have been placed in many places in the quarry.

Hoensbroek Castle is one of the largest castles in the Netherlands . The oldest part of the castle, especially the high round tower, dates from around 1360 , when Herman Hoen renovated it. Gravel mining on the Maas started in the 19th century. The gravel holes were left behind in the valley of the Meuse like large scars. A new purpose was found in water recreation. There were beaches, water sports areas, nature reserves, marinas and campsites.

The Mariapeel is a raised bog -like nature reserve in the municipality of Horst aan de Maas in the Dutch province of Limburg . It is approximately 1400 hectares and is managed by Staatsbosbeheer . Together with Deurnese Peel and the Grauwveen , it has been a protected wetland since 1993 . As a Natura 2000 area it is known as Deurnsche Peel & Mariapeel . It has been designated as a Birds Directive Area and a Habitats Directive Area.
