Khammouane Province is mostly of forested mountainous terrain located in the center of Laos. Khammouane, meaning “happy gold”, is believed to have been named after the gold deposits found in the area hundreds of years ago.

Tham Kong Lo or Kong Lor Cave is a karst limestone cave in Phu Hin Bun National Park, in Khammouane Province, Laos. It is located roughly 130 kilometers north of Thakhek, on the Nam Hin Bun River, which flows into the cave. The karst formation is dramatic and the cave has been cited as a "one of Southeast Asia's geological wonders".
The Sikhottabong Stupa and Ancient City site, on the east bank of the Mekong south of Thakhek, is the most important cultural and religious site in south central Laos. The Ancient City – remains that you can see of even older buildings – is important in the cultural background of the area. The region’s main event is the Sikhottabong festival
