Wichelsee - 4 Things to Know Before Visiting

The Sarner Aa is a 28 km long river in the Swiss canton of Obwalden. It drains the area to the eastern side of the Brünig Pass, flowing through the Lake Lungern, Lake Sarnen, and the Wichelsee, before entering Lake Lucerne near Alpnach. It goes by several names over its length, being known as the Lauibach upstream of the Lungerersee, and the Aa or Aawasser between the Lungerersee and Lake Sarnen.

The Pilatus Railway is a mountain railway in Switzerland and is the steepest rack railway in the world, with a maximum gradient of 48% and an average gradient of 35%. The line runs from Alpnachstad, on Lake Lucerne, to a terminus near the Esel summit of Pilatus at an elevation of 2,073 m, which makes it the highest railway in the canton of Obwalden and the second highest in Central Switzerland after the Furka line.

Ächerli Pass is a high mountain pass between the cantons of Obwalden and Nidwalden. It connects Kerns in the canton of Obwalden and Dallenwil in the canton of Nidwalden. The pass road has grades of up to 15 percent. From the road, peaks such as Pilatus, Rigi, Buochserhorn, Titlis, and Stanserhorn are visible.

The Stanserhorn is a mountain in Switzerland, located in the canton of Nidwalden near to the border with Obwalden, with the peak at 1,898 metres above sea level. It is a popular tourist destination, which can be reached from the adjacent town of Stans by a funicular railway and cable car, or via walking routes from Stans or Dallenwil.

The Alpnachersee is not an independent lake, but a branch of the Vierwaldstättersee. It lies in the two cantons of Nidwalden and Obwalden and is around 4.8 km long and 1.4 km wide. The southern flank of the Pilatus massif borders the northern bank. In particular, the Lopper slides like a bolt between the Alpnachersee and the Horwerbucht of the Vierwaldstättersee. The south-east bank mostly rises steeply to the Mueterschwanderberg or to the Rotzberg with the Rotzberg castle ruins.
