Parassinikkadavu Snake Park, dedicated to the preservation and conservation of snakes, is located 16 km from Kannur Town of Kerala State in Southern India. This is the only one of its kind in Kerala at its scale.
Things to see in the Snake Park
The park houses a more than 100 varieties of snakes and other animals, including Spectacled Cobra, King Cobra, Russell's Viper, Krait and various pit vipers. There is also a large collection of non-venomous snake including pythons. Other than the snakes, there are rare animals like the endangered species of Lion-tailed macaque, reptiles, birds, and crocodiles are also present in the park.
There are live shows conducted in the park during which trained professionals play and interact with a variety of snakes, including King Cobras and vipers. The purpose of the show is to remove mythical fears and superstitions about snakes. The snake park has three snake pits, fifteen glass cases for snakes and two large glass houses for King Cobras. As part of the research and conservation initiatives at the park, a King Cobra breeding centre is also present.
Snake Bite Treatment Centre at the park
The snake park is a subsidiary unit of Pappinisseri Vishachikitsa Society (Pappinisseri Snake Bite Treatment Centre), treatment for various snake bites are available from here. The centre in Pappiniseseri, Kannur was established in the year 1964 with an intention to focus on people who are suffering from snake bites. It functions as the leader of Advanced Clinical Research and Literacy Documentation in Agada Tantra, one of the eight branches of Ayurveda Medicinal practise that deals with toxicology due to food poisoning, snakebites, dog bites, insect bites and more. Ever since its inception in 1964, it had the monopoly in treating snake bite cases in the state.
How to reach Parassinikkadavu Snake Park
The park is 16 km away from Kannur town where the nearest major railway station is located. It is also near to the national highway to Mangalore. There are frequent buses from Kannur as well as the nearby town Taliparamba (8 km). You can get down at Dharmasala on the Manglore- Trivandrum highway and take a taxi/ rickshaw to reach the park. The Snake Park is located in Kannur District of Kerala State in Southern India.
