Mount Pulaski Courthouse State Historic Site - 4 Things to Know Before Visiting

The Postville Courthouse State Historic Site is a place of history and beauty. Built in 1840, the courtroom is well-preserved and represents a reminder of our country’s legal past. The courthouse held public trials, jury deliberations, hearings, as well as political speeches and other important town meetings during its 129 year tenure. J. H. Hawes Elevator consists of two grain elevators—the larger of which is 85'x60', and the smaller 45'x24'. The site is owned by Gillespie-based Hills Brothers Grain Company, and its elevators handle corn, soybeans, oats, and wheat for local farmers and processors. While the location has changed hands throughout its long history, it continues to offer an invaluable service as a grain storage hub that links rural areas to the global economy.

Rock Springs Conservation Area is a fantastic place to enjoy the great outdoors. The 1,628 acres of land has something for everyone. Nature lovers can take a hike on one of three trails throughout the area or watch for local wildlife such as deer, birds and other animals. Fishing enthusiasts have plenty of opportunities to cast their lines into the 22 lakes with an abundance of fish. Other activities include camping, horseback riding and field trials for hunting dogs.

Camp Butler National Cemetery is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women of the United States military. Spanning an area of over 73 acres, the cemetery holds the gravesites of over 48,000 people including veterans from every major nuclear conflict since World War II. This includes soldiers who have simply served their country with honor as well as those awarded a Medal of Honor and other prestigious awards.
