General Coffee State Park - 4 Things to Know Before Visiting

The Alapaha River Wildlife Management Area offers an incredible wildlife-watching experience. Here, visitors will find a rich array of waterfowl and wading birds like great blue herons, marsh hawks and egrets. The area also contains upland habitats populated with wild turkeys, white-tailed deer, bobwhite quail and rabbits. Fishing opportunities abound on the river's warmouth bass, redbreast sunfish and bluegill as well as in the beaver ponds stocked with largemouth bass.

Obediah's Okefenok is a unique and interesting location filled with stories of the Civil War. It is home to the Obediah’s Okefenok Confederate Cemetery, where many Georgia soldiers are buried, as well as the James H. Shuman House, which was built around 1900. Visitors can take walking tours of the area and stop by the few buildings still standing, including an old commissary from the pre-Civil War era.

The Jefferson Davis State Historic Site is a beautiful monument honoring the life of our nation's only president, Jefferson Davis. The site includes a raised stone monument and flagpole that stands on the east side of land once held by Mr.Davis. It includes a museum displaying artifacts from his life as well as an auditorium containing photos from significant events in American history. Visitors can also take a self-guided tour of Davis' home.

Laura S. Walker State Park, is a nature lover’s paradise. From fishing and kayaking to hiking, biking, and camping – you can find plenty of activities to recreate. For birdwatchers, the park hosts nearly 350 different species that stop to play on their way between nesting seasons. There's also an impressive water playground for children featuring slides and a large stone fountain! Beautiful trails make for perfect forest walks, with the abundant wildlife.

Okefenokee Swamp Park is a natural and cultural treasure worth discovering. Popular activities include bird watching, camping, boating, hiking, and guided tours of the swamp on electric pontoon boats.
