It is one of the oldest public land management areas in Florida, established in 1958. It consists of about 79,000 acres of swamps, hardwood forests, hammocks and other incredibly diverse ecosystems. There are also over 30 species of percent federally endangered or threatened animals that reside within its boundaries.
