The area that would become Aspen Snowmass Ski Resort was first explored by miners in the late 1850s. They were drawn to the area by the promise of gold and silver, but they quickly discovered that there was little mining potential. However, they did find that the areas around the mountains were perfect for winter recreation. In 1891, the first official ski club in America was formed in Aspen, and skiing quickly became a popular pastime.
