Aspen Chapel - 13 Things to Know Before Visiting

Aspen Chapel is a beautiful mountain setting that overlooks the town of Aspen. The chapel is available to the public for a variety of events and services. Aspen Chapel has a long and storied history. Originally built in 1879, it was one of the first churches in Pitkin County, Colorado. The small wooden structure served as a place of worship for the area's early settlers, many of whom were miners. Over the years, the chapel underwent several renovations, and in the 1950s it was relocated to its current location on Main Street. Today, Aspen Chapel is a popular destination for both locals and visitors, and its beautiful stained glass windows are a must-see.Despite its relatively small size, Aspen Chapel has played an important role in the community over the years. In addition to serving as a place of worship, it has also been used as a schoolhouse and a town hall. Today, it continues to be a gathering place for people of all faiths, and its doors are open to everyone.

The best time to visit Chapel is during the summer months when the weather is warm and dry. However, visitors should be aware that days can be very hot, so be sure to pack sunscreen and plenty of water. 

1. Arrive early. The chapel opens at 7am and it can get busy later in the day, so try to arrive as close to opening time as possible.
2. Dress warmly. Even in summer, the temperature inside the chapel can be quite cool, so make sure to bring a sweater or jacket.
3.  Take off your shoes. Visitors are asked to take their shoes off before entering the chapel, so make sure to wear socks or have something else to put on your feet.
4. Don't take photos. Photography is not allowed inside the chapel, out of respect for those who are worshipping there.
5.  Enjoy the silence. This is a quiet place, and visitors are asked to refrain from talking inside the chapel. If you need to communicate with someone, please do so outside.
6. Light a candle. If you'd like, you can purchase a candle at the entrance and light it inside the chapel. Please be sure to extinguish it before you leave.
7.  Leave offerings at the altar. If you have something you'd like to offer up in prayer, you can leave it at the altar in front of the chapel's main window.
8. Make a donation. The chapel relies on donations from visitors to help with its upkeep, so if you're able, please consider making a contribution before you go.
9. In addition to exploring the chapel itself, be sure to check out the adjacent graveyard - it's one of the oldest in Aspen and has some fascinating history attached to it.

In general, it takes about two hours to explore the area thoroughly. However, depending on how many stops you make and how long you spend enjoying the views, it could take longer. 

To reach Aspen Chapel, Pitkin County, Colorado, take the Maroon Creek Road from the Aspen roundabout for 2.5 miles. Turn right onto Castle Creek Road and continue for 6 miles until you reach the Chapel. The Chapel is located on the left side of the road. Please note that there is no parking at the Chapel. Parking is available at the Aspen Music Festival Grounds, located at the intersection of Maroon Creek Road and Castle Creek Road. 

There is no entrance fee to explore the chapel.

The Chapel is open to the public for services and events during the following hours: Monday through Friday 9 AM to 5 PM, Saturday 9 AM to 4 PM, and Sunday 10 AM to 4 PM.
