Coxcomb Peak is a mountain in Ouray County, Colorado. The peak is situated in the San Juan Mountains and has an elevation of 12,365 feet (3,765 meters). The mountain was named for its resemblance to the comb of a rooster, or coxcomb. The first recorded ascent of the peak was made in 1874 by a group of miners. The miners were attempting to reach the mineral-rich virgin claims near the summit of the peak but were unsuccessful in their attempt. The peak remained unclimbed for over 50 years until it was finally summited by three mountaineers in 1926. Today, Coxcomb Peak is a popular destination for hikers and climbers. The standard route to the summit is rated as Class 2 on the Yosemite Decimal System, making it accessible to experienced hikers. For those looking for a challenge, there are also several Class 4 and 5 routes up the peak. Fall is the best time to visit Coxcomb Peak in Ouray County, Colorado. The leaves are changing color and the weather is cooling off, making it the perfect time to go hiking or camping.

1. Start early. The Coxcomb Trailhead is located at an elevation of 9,200 feet, so it's important to give yourself plenty of time to acclimatize to the altitude before starting your hike.
2.  Bring plenty of water. There is no potable water available at the trailhead, so you'll need to bring enough water for your entire hike.
3. Be prepared for windy conditions. Coxcomb Peak is known for its windy conditions, so be sure to pack a windbreaker or jacket.
4. Don't forget your sunscreen and sunglasses. The sun can be intense at high altitudes, so be sure to protect your skin and eyes from the UV rays.
5. Take your time on the trail. The Coxcomb Trail is a strenuous hike with an elevation gain of over 2,000 feet, so take your time and enjoy the scenery along the way.

The Standard Route is approximately four miles long and takes between four and six hours to complete. However, depending on your fitness level and the weather conditions, it may take longer or shorter to reach the summit. 

To reach Coxcomb Peak, take Highway 550 north from Ouray for about two miles. Look for a sign for County Road 4 and turn left. Follow County Road 4 for about seven miles until you reach the trailhead parking lot. From there, the trail to the summit of Coxcomb Peak is about three miles long and gains nearly 2,000 feet in elevation.

There are several hiking trails that lead to the summit, and the entrance fee is just $5 per person.

 Coxcomb Peak is open year-round, and the hours vary depending on the season. In the spring and summer, the peak is open from dawn to dusk. In the fall, the peak is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. In the winter, the peak is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
