From Denver, take I-70 west for about 235 miles to Exit 211 for US-40 toward Empire/Berthoud Pass. After 0.3 miles, turn left onto US-40 West/West Portal Road and continue to follow US-40 West for about another 20 miles. Then take a slight left turn onto CO-149 S/N Main Street, and continue to follow CO-149 S for another 48 miles. Finally, turn right toward Forest Road 363/Fitzsimmons Road and continue for about 6.5 miles to reach the parking area for Fork Rio Grande lake.

There is no entrance fee to explore this lake and its premises. 

It is open all the time year around
