The name "Unaweep" comes from the Ute Indians, who inhabited the area before European settlement. The word "Unaweep" means "canyon with two rivers." The canyon is situated between the Gunnison River and the Colorado River. It is one of only two canyons that drain into two different oceans (the Pacific and the Atlantic). The canyon began forming approximately 300 million years ago when a large inland sea covered what is now the western United States. As the sea began to evaporate, massive salt deposits were left behind. Over time, these salt deposits slowly eroded, carving out the distinctive canyon we see today. Unaweep Canyon is a popular destination for hiking, camping, and rock climbing. It is also home to mule deer, bighorn sheep, and bald eagles.

The best time to visit Unaweep Canyon is in the spring or fall. During these seasons, the weather is mild, and the scenery is beautiful. The canyon is also relatively uncrowded during these times of the year. In contrast, summer is the busiest season at Unaweep Canyon, tourists flock to the area.

5. Pack a first-aid kit. There is no cell service in the canyon; one must be prepared for any eventuality.

The best way to reach the canyon is by 4-wheel drive vehicle or mountain bike. From the town of Whitewater, head west on Hwy 141 for about 6 miles. Turn left onto a dirt road just before reaching the small community of Divide. Follow this road for about 3 miles to reach the Unaweep Tabeguache Scenic Byway. Turn right and continue following the byway for another 6 miles to reach the Unaweep/Divide Ranger Station. Continue driving or parking from here and begin exploring on foot.

Unaweep Canyon is open from 8 am to 6 pm year-round.
