Colorado National Monument was established on May 24, 1911 by President William Howard Taft. The Monument is located in western Colorado and encompasses 20,577 acres of land. The area is known for its unique geology, which includes canyons, mesas, and desert landscapes.

The first recorded exploration of the area took place in 1858, when a group of prospectors came across what is now known as Fruita Canyon. However, it wasn't until the early 1900s that the region began to draw serious attention from tourists and developers. In 1907, John Otto became the first person to hike the entire length of Fruita Canyon. Otto was so enamored with the area that he and the residents in the area began lobbying for its protection. His efforts eventually paid off, and in 1911 Colorado National Monument was established.

The entrance fee is $20 per vehicle or $10 per person if you are walking or biking. The fees help to support educational programs and research projects that contribute to our understanding of this unique landscape.
