North Sterling State Park - 13 Things to Know Before Visiting

The park offers a variety of activities for visitors, including hiking, fishing, swimming, hunting, horseback riding and boating. There are also several campgrounds in the park, offering a great way to spend a night under the stars. You can also camp overnight, and there are even cabins available for rent. Picnicking is another great way to enjoy the park's stunning scenery, and there are several sheltered picnic areas dotted around the site. 

North Sterling State Park is located in Logan County, Colorado. The park was established in 1992 and covers a total of 5,700 acres. Prior to becoming a state park, the area was used for ranching and farming. As more and more people moved to Colorado, however, the demand for recreational opportunities grew. The state legislature created North Sterling State Park in order to preserve the natural beauty of the area and provide a place for people to enjoy the outdoors. The park is named after the North Sterling Reservoir, which was built in the early 1960s as part of the Colorado-Big Thompson Project. 

The park is open year-round, but different activities are available at different times of the year. For example, the best time to hike is from late spring through early fall, when the weather is warm and there is less chance of snow and ice on the trails. Fishing is also best in the warmer months.  And if you're hoping to catch a glimpse of some of the park's wildlife, winter is the best time to visit, as many animals are more active then. 

1.  North Sterling State Park is located in the high desert, so the temperature can vary widely from day to night. Be sure to bring layers that you can easily add or remove as needed.
2. Bring your own food and water. There are no restaurants or convenience stores within the park boundaries.
3.  Be mindful of wildlife. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, elk, and bighorn sheep. 
4. The park is open year-round, but some trails may be closed during the winter months. Be sure to check the trail conditions before you go.
5. Fishing is allowed in the park, but please be sure to follow all state and federal fishing regulations.
6. The park has several scenic spots that are perfect for photography lovers. Remember to take your time and enjoy the views.

There is no maximum time limit for how long you can stay in the park, overnight camping is only allowed in designated areas.  However, visitors are encouraged to stay for only a day or two so that others may enjoy the park as well. Regardless of how long you stay, be sure to follow the Leave No Trace principles to help keep the park clean and preserved for future. 

The park is located in Mesa County, Colorado, and is easily reached by car. From the city of Grand Junction, take Highway 50 east for about 30 miles. Take the exit for CO-340 E/ Monument Rd and follow the signs to the park. The drive takes about an hour, and once you reach the park you will find plenty of parking available. There are also a number of camping sites if you wish to stay overnight. 

The admission fee to North Sterling State Park is approximately $5 for individuals. There are also group rates available if you're planning on bringing your family or friends!
