Martin Lake - 4 Things to Know Before Visiting

Lathrop State Park is nestled in the shadow of the Spanish Peaks. This beautiful park offers a gentle climate, 103 campsites, fishing, waterskiing, golfing, hiking and great views of the nearby mountain ranges.The park features two lakes, Martin Lake and Horseshoe Lake, that offer fishing for tiger muskie. Over 107,000 visitors passed through Lathrop State Park in the last year for which figures are available.

Walsenburg Reservoir is a reservoir in Colorado situated nearby to Walsenburg Water System Dam, and southwest of Lake Meriam. It was a 22-foot-high, 3,000-foot-long, high-hazard dam constructed circa 1910.

The Walsenburg Mining Museum, housed in an 1896 jail, exhibits not only the stories of Huerfano County's mining camps, but memorabilia from such notable characters. You can explore the stories of coal miners and the struggles between the miners and operators. Exhibits include photographs and miner's tools and equipment.

Huerfano Butte is a volcanic plug located 8.8 miles north of Walsenburg in Huerfano County. The butte stands 300-foot high like a lone sentinel in the arid scrubland. It’s visible for miles from any direction and served as a landmark for early explorers, signaling the route to life-giving rivers that flowed from the nearby Rocky Mountains.

Tombstone Hill is a prominent hill on the north side of Edisto Glacier in the Admiralty Mountains, Victoria Land.Its summit is littered with slabs of hard sedimentary rock, many of which are steeply tilted on end to give the appearance of a field of tombstones. It is a good trekking destination and also there are so many things to see and do here.

Francisco Fort Museum is a regional museum with a collection representing multiple eras. Where Legends Roam. They house the heirlooms of Huerfano County including locally and nationally important collections of Native American, Spanish settler, and pioneer artifacts. The Museum is open for tours Tuesday through Saturday from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
