The Spanish Peaks Wilderness is a 19,226 acres wilderness area in Huerfano County. The wilderness area is only around 19,000 acres wide and is contained entirely in Colorado. It is managed by the US Forest Service. The Peaks have traditional and religious significance to American Indian tribes including the Apache, Comanche, and Ute.

Silver Mountain rises just east of Mt. Mestas and is composed of the same granitic materials. It is also at the center of a set of granitic dikes radiating outward like spokes on a wheel around the mountain. A good trekking destination and also you can spend some beautiful time here with breathtaking views and also with beautiful nature.

Mount Mestas is an imposing peak in Huerfano County, lying 3,000 feet over the plains to the east. Although it is very prominent in in area, it hardly receives any visitors, bypassed for the popular Sierra Blanca Massif which is farther west along US 160. This peak poses a grueling climb, starting south of the mountain along the highway and slogging northward over 2,500 vertical feet to the summit.

Walsenburg Reservoir is a reservoir in Colorado situated nearby to Walsenburg Water System Dam, and southwest of Lake Meriam. It was a 22-foot-high, 3,000-foot-long, high-hazard dam constructed circa 1910.

Cordova Pass is a 11,260 foot mountain pass just outside of the Spanish Peaks Wilderness. It is reached via the Apishapa Road, a leg of the Scenic Highway of Legends. Most of the time, the pass may be traversed by passenger vehicles, although it is not accessible from mid-November to late May.There are vault toilets, several picnic tables and a couple of primitive campsites in the summit area. This is a "Fee Area".
