From Scharnitz, the valley is bounded to the north for a few kilometers by the northern link of the Karwendels, it is then interrupted by the Karwendeltal , the valley where the Karwendelbach flows, and to the east by the Hinterautal-Vomper link. The southern limit is formed by the Gleirsch-Halltal link.

The border between Germany and Austria runs over its summit.The normal climbing route, runs from Scharnitz westwards and below the Ahrntalköpfle to the Riedberg. Below this mountain the path bends to the southwest from the Arnspitzhütte, whence it heads northwest to the summit.
