The Hinterau Valley runs from Scharnitz in the eastern end of the valley, the Rossloch , over a length of 14 km . From Scharnitz, the valley is bounded to the north for a few kilometers by the northern link of the Karwendels, it is then interrupted by the Karwendeltal , the valley where the Karwendelbach flows, and to the east by the Hinterautal-Vomper link. The southern limit is formed by the Gleirsch-Halltal link.

The Pleisenspitze is also a popular destination for ski tours and snowshoe hikers in winter, whereby the route essentially follows the normal route.

To the south a prominent arête runs over to the Brandjochkreuz and the Achselkopf and down to the Innsbruck quarter of Hötting. To the east, the main ridge of the Nordkette runs over to Frau Hitt.
