Hospitalfield House is a stunning early Arts & Crafts Scottish Baronial country house, left in trust in 1890 to support artists. Its collection are a rare example of the patronage of one person, Patrick Allan-Fraser. A Picture Gallery he designed himself houses artworks by a generation of British artists from his own peer group.

Arbroath Abbey, in the Scottish town of Arbroath, was founded in 1178 by King William the Lion for a group of Tironensian Benedictine monks from Kelso Abbey. St Vigeans Sculptured Stones Museum, located in the Angus village of St Vigeans, houses an outstanding collection of Pictish carved stones. IT has 38 carved stones which once stood up in the old church and are amongst the last of Pictish art, making them internationally important. The displays include hands-on interactives, audio and tactile elements and a touch screen database through which the detail of the stones can be explored.

The Arbroath cliffs are made up of river-lain sandstones and conglomerates (petrified gravel) of two different ages – 410 million years old and 370 million years old. It also offers a beautiful walk through the bay and enjoy the sound and smell of the sea and walk off the chips.

Seaton Cliffs extends over 12ha of unimproved grassland behind red sandstone cliffs. Spectacular cliffs of rich red sandstones and conglomerates make Seaton Cliffs a colourful spot at any time of the year. Over the 350 million years since they were deposited, these rocks have been subjected to the immense forces of the sea. Plants, such as thrift, sea campion and six species of vetch, thrive in these conditions, and over 300 species of invertebrates are attracted to the wildflowers.

Carnoustie Golf Links is an iconic, world-leading golf destination in Scotland and home to ‘Golf’s Greatest Test’. Golf has been played at the Links since the 16th century and it was Carnoustie natives who went on to establish the Professional Golfer’s Associations of America and Australia.

The small pretty beach in Carnoustie is located just a few minutes walking distance from the train station and town centre. The beach slopes gently into the sea, and at high tide the water can come all the way up to the sea wall. At low tide the distance to the water’s edge can be as much as 300 metres, so it is best to check the tide times before visiting.

The Barry Burn, otherwise known as Pitairlie Burn is a minor river in Angus, Scotland. It rises in the eastern portion of the Sidlaw Hills and flows past Newbigging, through Barry and the western part of Carnoustie, before taking a meandering course through Carnoustie Golf Links.

Barry Mill is now one of only a handful of mills still powered by water. Rebuilt after a fire around 1814, it is probably the largest and finest example of its type still in operation. Carlungie Earth House is one of the largest and most complex examples of its kind in Scotland. It was accidentally discovered during ploughing in 1949. Subsequent excavations during the following two years also revealed about eight associated stone dwellings at ground level. The winding passage is one of the most complex earth house structures in Scotland. Despite the name, it is not a house, nor is it built of earth.

This old majestic castle stands on high ground overlooking Lunan Bay, on the North Sea coast. Only a part of the fifteenth century rectangular tower, and the 2-metre thick east curtain wall remain. The remains are those of the 15th-century keep, and the surrounding wall, or enceinte, which may date from the 13th century. A midden below the castle is continually eroding, yielding a number of artefacts now in the Montrose Museum. The castle is protected as scheduled monument.
