It was the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal Dynasty until 1638 when the capital was shifted from Agra to Delhi. The fort can be more accurately described as a walled city.

It was built during the time of Ibrahim Lodi by Muhammad, son of Umar the governor of Kol who was the governor of this region during the time of Farrukh Siyar and Muhammad Shah, further rebuilt the fort.
