5 Forts to Explore in Gujarat

Bhadra fort is situated in the walled city of Ahmedabad, India. With its well carved royal palaces, mosques, gates and open spaces, it was renovated in 2014 by Ahmedabad municipal corporation and archaeological survey of India as a cultural center for the city.

This is a hill located in the Parnera village oof Valsad district. There is also a fort in the top of the hill which is a perfect example of ancient architecture. But it doesn't get much care and now its situation is very bad. A good place for trekking and one can see the whole village from this hill.

Roha fort is situated on the hillock of the same name, 50 km from Bhuj. It’s height is 500 feet from the ground level and 800 feet from the sea level. Roha was the leading Jagir of Kutch state and there were 52 villages under this Jagir. Rao Khengarji I (1510-1585) established Kutch and became a ruler of Kutch. His brother Sahebji set up Roha village and died after a battle with Raysinhji Zala of Halvad. After his death his successor Jiyaji built two big tanks on the Roha Hill.

This is a 16th-century fort in the city of Surat. Today, Surat Castle houses various government offices. Surat Castle offers clear view of the surrounding areas and River Tapti.

The magnificent fort of Upperkot is said to be built by Chandragupta Maurya in 319 BC and continued to be used during the Gupta period. The fort lost its importance when the capital of the Saurashtra region was moved from Junagadh to Vallabhi by Maitrakas and was abandoned for 300 years. Later it was rediscovered and rebuilt with all the updated requirements during 976 AD by Rah Grahar of the Chudasama dynasty and later it came under the rule of Mughals in 1473 CE.
