Andalusia, was the home of prominent Southern author and essayist Flannery O'Connor. Situated on a 500-acre farm near Milledgeville, this sprawling estate saw the birth of many of O’Connor’s critically acclaimed works such as ‘Wise Blood’ and 'A Good Man Is Hard to Find'. Overlooking a placid lake and surrounded by pecan trees, it was in Andalusia that ‘The preeminent chronicler of the Deep South’ honed her craft.
Georgia's Old Governor's Mansion is the oldest surviving governor's residence in the state. Built in 1839, the neoclassical mansion served as home to 10 of Georgia's Governors over a 60-year period. The exterior of the mansion is made up of 20-inch-thick brick walls and white Corinthian columns which lead up to entrance portico. Inside, you'll find original antiques and artifacts that offer insight into the political and social history of Georgia during this time.
The Milledgeville Historic District is a place steeped in history that serves as a reminder of the time when this area was a political and military powerhouse. From 1803-1868, it served as the state capital of Georgia, during which time many important buildings were constructed including the original state capitol building and other government buildings. Now, these same structures constitute an historic neighborhood full of over 700 cultural structures.
The Sallie Ellis Davis House, is an impressive testament to the cultural and architectural history of the South. The house was built by Freedman’s Bureau carpenter and former slave William Washington at some point between 1867 and 1871. Its board-and-batten style displays an interesting combination of Greek Revival and African American design elements that reflect the Eclectic styles of the period.
