6 Sculptures to Explore in Illinois

The Black Hawk Statue is an impressive monument dedicated to the renowned Sac leader from the same name. Standing 32 feet tall, the bronze statue honors Black Hawk's courage, strength and resilience as a fighter and leader for his people. Built in 1911 by sculptor Loredo Taft, the statue commands attention upon approach with its grandeur and remarkable detail - from its bold feathers to its intricate facial features.

The Piasa Bird is a legendary dragon-like creature found in stories of the Illiniwek people who lived near modern Madison County. The creature was said to originally inhabit the area near the Mississippi River. According to folklore, it would swoop and attack both man and beast with great ferocity. Later, two Native Americans painted a large image of the Piasa Bird on one of these cliffs with vibrant colors and symbols to commemorate their victory over its evil nature.

The sculptor Preston Jackson recently unveiled his stunning sculpture of comedian and actor, Richard Pryor, in Peoria County, Illinois. The elaborate bronze statue stands at an impressive 10-feet tall on a granite base that reads “He raised consciousness and brought joy” representing the lasting impact Pryor had in his hometown community. Jackson was inspired by photographs of Pryor from the early 1970’s to capture him in motion with a microphone stand dripping from his fingertips.

The Robert Wadlow Statue is a tribute to the late Robert Pershing Wadlow, who was celebrated as the tallest man in history. Standing 8ft 11inches tall and weighing 491 lbs., he often attracted crowds of people wherever he went. The statue depicts him standing in a suit holding a violin with one hand, as his long stature is featured on a 12-foot pedestal that brings him to a total height of 20 feet. Dedicated by the Alton Regional Convention and Visitor’s Bureau on June 16th, 1985.

Sun Singer, is a breathtakingly gorgeous park and hidden gem of the local area. It consists of nature trails that wind through the woods along a stream and there are plenty of beautiful scenic spots for picnicking. Visitors can experience the amazing wildlife of the area first-hand, with an abundance of birds, snakes, turtles and other small animals making their home in these peaceful surroundings. Superman Statue stands at a whopping 30 feet. This iconic figure is made of bronze, commemorating both the superhero and all he represents in this small town. Its prominent cape, striped with blue and waving behind him as if he were soaring, serves as a testament to his bravery and courage. Alongside the statue is a plaque declaring it as The Superman Celebration Fountain, honoring the fantastic character first created by Jerry Siegel over 80 years ago!
