Its cathedral has been the primary ecclesiastical centre of England since the early 7th century CE. Before the English Reformation the cathedral was part of a Benedictine monastic community known as Christ Church, Canterbury, as well as being the seat of the archbishop.
St Augustine's Abbey was one of the most important monasteries in medieval England. One of Britain’s oldest remaining monastic sites, the abbey was originally built as a burial place for the kings of Kent. Much of the layout of the abbey has been preserved and its ruins can be seen around the grounds. After the abbey's dissolution, it underwent dismantlement until 1848.
