Piazza Libertà is the oldest square in the city of Udine, defined as the most beautiful Venetian-style square on the mainland. It rises in the clearing below the Castle hill. it was known in the Middle Ages as the square of the wine that was traded here. In 1350 the town council house was established there and then took the name of Piazza del Comune, then with the arrival of the Venetians in 1500 it took the name of one of the lieutenants, becoming Piazza Contarena.
