Originally the place was called Hauptsee. In 1905 it was renamed in connection with the commemoration of the Battle of Morgarten on November 15, 1315, and the erection of a battle memorial. The name was changed at the request of the Oberägeri-Morgarten Tourist Association by the Zurich District Post Office.
