The West Highland Museum tells the story of the Scottish Highlands and the Islands of Scotland. Neptune's Staircase is a staircase lock comprising eight locks on the Caledonian Canal which connects the Scottish east coast at Inverness with the west coast at Corpach near Fort William. Built by Thomas Telford between 1803 and 1822, it is the longest staircase lock in Britain, lifting boats 64 feet (20 m). The summit, which is the collapsed dome of an ancient volcano, features the ruins of an observatory which was operational between 1883 and 1904.
