The island has a population of 113 people, and it is connected by the Runde Bridge to the island of Remøya to the south. It is famous for its enormous number of birds. It is said that there are about 500,000 to 700,000 seabirds inhabiting the island, most of them are to be found in the cliffs. The Runde Environmental Centre is a research station at the bird island.
