Bessvatnet - 4 Things to Know Before Visiting

A beautiful and adventurous lake which was located in Norway's Jotunheimen National Park. This river has a characteristic light-green color resulting from the large quantity of rock flour which is discharged into the Gjende by the Muru river. The name is derived from Norse gandr m 'staff, stick'. This is referring to the form of the long and narrow lake.

Besseggen is one of Norway's most popular mountain classics. The green waters of the Gjende lake, cradled amidst the steep mountains of the majestic Jotunheimen National Park, create the perfect scenery. Bessvatnet lake, on the opposite side of the ridge, is considered to be Norway's clearest lake, where you can see as far as 30 meters below the surface of the water.

This enormous dome-shaped mountain is a solid eye-catcher for anyone who drives highway 51 over Valdresflye or walks Besseggen. Almost 1300 meters it rises straight up from Gjende, and if you come driving north over Valdresflye, you get a real impression of the dimensions. Besshøe is a popular hiking destination, both due to the fantastic view from the top and the relatively easy access.

Surtningssue is the seventh-highest mountain in Norway. It lies in Jotunheimen, on the border between the municipalities Lom and Vågå. Surtningssue has several distinct peaks, of which Store Surtningssue is the highest. Surtningssue is most easily reached from the cabin Memurubu, along the northern shore of Gjendin.

Jotunheimen National Park is a national park in Norway, recognized as one of the country's premier hiking and fishing regions. The national park covers 1,151 square kilometres and is part of the larger area Jotunheimen. More than 250 peaks rise above an elevation of 1,900 metres, including Northern Europe's two highest peaks: Galdhøpiggen at 2,469 metres, and Glittertind at 2,465 metres.
