Driftless Area National Wildlife Refuge is a unique and ecologically important refuge located in the Upper Midwest of the United States. It spans parts of Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, covering an area known as the Driftless Region. The refuge is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge is the largest refuge in a network of five refuges and many smaller wetlands located along the entire length of the Mississippi River. An awe-inspiring landscape of islands, sloughs and backwaters, it serves as an important habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds, herons and more than 260 other species of birds. The refuge also provides excellent habitat for endangered species, such as bald eagles and pallid sturgeons.

Roberts Creek State Preserve is located in rural Clayton County, Iowa, in Wagner Township, near St. Olaf, Iowa, and a few miles north of Elkader, Iowa. Roberts Creek is a tributary of the Turkey River.The Preserve contains algific talus slopes, a rare ecosystem unique to the Driftless Area and hosts a threatened wildflower.

Carter House in Elkader, Iowa, also known as W. C. Reimer House, is a Greek Revival building built in 1850 as a duplex by brothers Ernest and Henry Carter.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1976. Its 1975 NRHP nomination document calls it a "lovely Greek Revival home" which "contributes substantially to the historic ambience of Elkader", having greater effect due to its location across from the historic Clayton County Courthouse.
