Mermet Lake State Conservation Area - 4 Things to Know Before Visiting

Mermet Lake, is a natural wonder provides a great habitat for different wildlife species as well as fishing and recreational activities. The lake has an average depth of around 17 feet, creating many opportunities for anglers to move around and cast their line. Mermet Lake covers an impressive 450 acres of land with no fewer than 8 boat ramps throughout the area. Visitors can explore nearly 6 miles of shoreline or stake out their favorite spot with the provided picnic tables and grills.

This 6,000 acre area offers a refuge to thousands of species of plants and animals, many of which are either threatened or endangered. Visitors can explore the diverse ecosystems here on foot, via canoe or kayak along the river system that meanders throughout the hot, moist swampy areas and cool sandstone bluffs. Take part in bird watching and hiking or fishing from one of the dozens of holes and oxbows scattered throughout the nature preserve.

Heron Pond – Little Black Slough Nature Preserve is a paradise for nature lovers. It is home to many different species of birds such as herring gulls, night herons and kingfishers, as well as other wildlife like beavers, turtles and toads. From its peaceful ponds to the lush wetland flora, this area provides visitors with a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There are over two miles of trails which allow visitors to take in the stunning views of meadows.

The Barkhausen Cache River Wetlands Center is a great place to explore the wonders of nature. Featuring nearly 1,500 acres of wetlands that include a variety of wildlife, fens, and bottomland hardwood forests, this center is a haven for hikers and birdwatchers alike. With numerous trails and waterways to explore, visitors can experience sights such as bald cypress trees and limestone bluffs while taking in sweeping views of nearby Lake of Egypt.

Superman Statue stands at a whopping 30 feet. This iconic figure is made of bronze, commemorating both the superhero and all he represents in this small town.
