Deer Grove Forest Preserve - 4 Things to Know Before Visiting

Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve is a breathtaking destination for nature lovers. It offers over 1,000 acres of rolling hills, prairies, wetlands and ravines to be explored. Visitors can spot wildlife such as eagles, deer and turkeys as they explore the lush greenery. Whether guests are looking for a leisurely stroll down one of the multiple trails or an adventurous canoeing trip on Buffalo Creek itself; there is something for everyone.

The Norge Ski Club founded in 1903, it is the oldest ski club in U S. The club includes a jump hill, a chalet-style clubhouse, and several miles of trails and slopes for skiing, snowboarding. The members are enthusiastic outdoor enthusiasts who come together to enjoy winter sports and just have a good time. They also socialize together, learning from each other's successes on the slopes, enjoying camaraderie with friends in included pub nights, breakfasts and hot cocoa evenings at their lodge.

Bettendorf Castle is an impressive four-tower medieval stone castle situated on 11 scenic acres. Constructed over the course of 40 years by German immigrant Nicholas J. Bettendorf, the castle was built entirely with his own two hands and no machine assistance or outside labor. The 24-room structure includes several original fireplaces and woodwork, a unique walled courtyard, 20th century bathrooms and electric kitchen appliances.

Edward L. Ryerson Conservation Area comprises over 30 acres of breathtaking scenery. This conservation area is accessible by both car and foot. Visitors can enjoy expansive views of open fields filled with wildflowers, creeks lined with shady trees, and a meandering stretch of Union Pacific Railroad tracks along the eastern side of the property. Taking advantage of its variety of habitats, this is a great place to observe wildlife ranging from birds to red-bellied turtles to white-tailed deer.

Busse Woods is a fantastic outdoor space and forest preserve, which encompasses over 3,700 acres of natural habitat, is a great spot for outdoor activities including cycling, fishing, and hiking. There are also plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities -we've been lucky enough to spot hawks, coyotes, foxes and other animals! In addition to the wildlife viewing area there's also multiple camping spots spread throughout, so you can relax while listening to the peaceful chirping of wildlife.

Lake Atwood is a captivating place to visit. Spilling out of over 600 acres, the lake offers breathtaking views and plenty of outdoor recreational activities. Whether you’re on the lake for fishing or taking long walks along its shore, it’s impossible to have a dull moment at this stunning freshwater lake. Boating is also common among visitors and locals alike - with canoeing, kayaking and sailing being popular weekend pastimes. Lake Atwood is a delightful destination any time of the year!
