There's no shortage of things to do at Twilight Peak in San Juan County, Colorado. For starters, the area is home to some of the best hiking and camping in the state. The earliest recorded inhabitants of the area now known as Twilight Peak were the Ute Indians, who referred to the mountain as "Tava," meaning sun. The Utes lived in the region for centuries, and their history is still evident in the petroglyphs they left behind on the rocks near the summit. In 1873, a gold prospector named John Twilight stumbled upon a rich vein of ore on the mountain, and word of his discovery quickly spread. Soon, a small mining town had sprung up at the base of the peak, and Twilights Mining Company was established to extract the valuable ore. The company operated for several years before going bankrupt, and the town was abandoned soon afterward. Today, Twilight Peak is a popular destination for hikers and campers, who come to enjoy the stunning views and peaceful solitude. Though it is now a largely forgotten place,the history of Twilight Peak is still apparent to those who take the time to explore it.

Although Twilight Peak is beautiful at any time of year, the best time to visit is during the summer months. From June to August, the days are long and sunny, perfect for hiking, biking, and enjoying all that the great outdoors has to offer. The wildflower meadows are also in full bloom during this time, making for a truly spectacular sight.

To reach Twilight Peak in San Juan County, Colorado, take Highway 550 north from Durango. The highway will wind its way through the Animas River valley and then begin to climb into the San Juan Mountains. After about 33 miles, you will reach the small town of Silverton. Continue north on Highway 550 for another 9 miles until you reach the turnoff for Twilight Peak Road (County Road 2). Follow County Road 2 for 6 miles until it dead-ends at the trailhead. From the trailhead, it is a strenuous 4-mile hike to the summit of Twilight Peak.

There is no entrance fee to explore Twilight Peak, San Juan County, Colorado. However, there is a suggested donation of $5 per person or $10 per family which goes towards the maintenance of the trail. 

The peak is open all year round for visitors to explore and appreciate. The hours of operation vary depending on the season, but generally, the peak is open from dawn until dusk. In the winter, the peak is open from 9 AM until 4 PM, and in the summer it is open from 8 AM until 8 PM. However, visitors are advised to check the local conditions before heading out, as the hours may change due to weather or other factors.
