Columbia Point was originally settled by the Ute people, who called the area Pah-te-ko-ti, or "red earth place." The first Euro-American settlers arrived in the 1850s, and the town was officially founded in 1859. Columbia Point was a silver mining town, and at its peak, it had a population of over 1,000 people. However, the silver mines were depleted by the early 1880s, and the town began to decline. By the early 20th century, Columbia Point was a ghost town. In recent years, there has been some interest in resurrecting the town, and a few businesses have opened up in the old buildings. However, Columbia Point remains largely a ghost town today.

1. Columbia Point is the highest point in Saguache County, at an elevation of 12,943 feet.It is located in the San Luis Valley, the largest alpine valley in North America.
2. Columbia Point was designated a Wilderness Study Area in 1980.
3. There are two main trails that lead to the summit of Columbia Point: the South Colony Lakes Trail and the Horn Lakes Trail. 
4. In the early 20th century, the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad built a branch line through Columbia Point.

To reach Columbia Point, Saguache County, Colorado, follow these simple steps. First, take Highway 50 west from Gunnison for about 35 miles. Then, turn left onto CR 842 and follow the signs for about 2.5 miles until you reach the turn-off for Columbia Point. The road is unpaved but passable by any vehicle. Once you reach the turn-off, follow the signs for another 1.5 miles until you reach the trailhead parking area. From there, it's a short hike to the summit of Columbia Point. 

The area is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. But it may vary depending on the season. So be sure to check with the information centre.
