Mount Ouray - 13 Things to Know Before Visiting

There are plenty of things to do at Mount Ouray, Saguache County, Colorado. For starters, visitors can explore the many hiking trails that wind through the area. With so much scenic beauty to take in, it's no wonder that hiking is one of the most popular activities at Mount Ouray. In addition to hiking, visitors can also enjoy fishing, horseback riding, and picnicking. There's also a playground for kids and a group camping area for larger parties. In the early 1800s, the Ute Indians called the mountain that is now known as Mount Ouray, "The Sleeping Giant." The mountain was a sacred place for the Utes and was used as a lookout point for hunting game. The first recorded exploration of the mountain by a non-native was in 1874 by a group of surveyors. In the late 1800s, miners began to explore the area for minerals and metals. However, it was not until 1908 that Mount Ouray became a formal mining district. In 1922, the first road was built to the top of the mountain and, in subsequent years, several mines were established on its slopes. Although mining activity has declined in recent decades, Mount Ouray remains an important part of Colorado's history.

The best time to visit Mount Ouray in Saguache County, Colorado is during the summer months. The weather is warm and sunny, making it ideal for hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities. during the summer months also offer the most daylight hours, giving visitors more time to enjoy all that the area has to offer. 

1. Ouray is a town rich in history with many interesting stories to tell. The first thing you should do when visiting is to go on a tour of the Ouray County Museum.  You can learn about the town’s mining past, as well as see some amazing minerals and fossils.
2. Next, take a walk or drive around town and take in the beautiful mountain views. Be sure to stop by Box Canyon Falls and the Bear Creek Falls Trailhead for some great photo opportunities.
3. If you’re feeling adventurous, go hiking or rock climbing in one of the nearby parks, such as the Uncompahgre National Forest or the San Juan Mountains National Scenic Area.  There are trails for all levels of experience, so everyone can enjoy the great outdoors.
4. Take your time and enjoy the views along the way - there are plenty of places to rest and take photos. 
5. Stay on the trail - there are steep cliffs and loose rocks that can be dangerous if you wander off-course. 
6. Be careful with fire if you're camping - fires are only allowed in designated areas. 
7. Remember that cell phone reception is limited in the mountains, so tell someone where you're going before you start your hike.

2. The mountain is named after Chief Ouray of the Ute tribe, who was known as a peacemaker and friend to white settlers.
3. There are several hiking trails that lead to the summit of Mount Ouray, ranging in difficulty from easy to strenuous.
4. Views from the top of the mountain include the San Juan Mountains to the west and the Sangre de Cristo range to the east.
5. At night, stargazers can often see constellations such as Orion and Scorpius rising over Mount Ouray.

7. No visit to Ouray would be complete without indulging in some delicious local cuisine.  There are plenty of great restaurants to choose from, but be sure to try a slice of pie at Sherbino Theater – it’s famous for a reason!
    

The maximum time required to explore Mount Ouray is two days. This will give you plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and complete a few hikes. However, if you are only able to spend one day in the area, that is still enough time to get a taste of what Mount Ouray has to offer.

To reach Mount Ouray, follow Highway 285 south from the town of Saguache. After about 12 miles, you will see a sign for the turnoff to the mount. Follow the dirt road for about two miles until you reach the trailhead. The trail to the top of Mount Ouray is about 1.5 miles long and ascends 1,500 feet. The hike is strenuous but rewards hikers with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Though there is no formal entrance fee, the county does encourage visitors to pay a small fee to help maintain the trails. The recommended donation is $5 per person or $20 per family, and can be paid at the trailhead or online.

Visitors should be aware that the opening hours for Mount Ouray vary depending on the time of year. From June to August, the area is open from 8 Am to 8 PM, while from September to May it is only open from 8 AM to 5 PM. In addition, the area is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the winter months.
