Lake Isabel is a popular recreation spot in Pueblo County, Colorado. But it wasn't always a lake. In the late 1800s, the area now known as Lake Isabel was home to a thriving community of miners and farmers. The town had a school, a church, and even a newspaper. But all that changed in 1902 when a massive landslide sent a wall of water crashing down on the town, destroying everything in its path. More than 100 people were killed, and the town was forever buried under debris. Today, Lake Isabel is a peaceful place where people can come to enjoy the outdoors. But for those who know its history, it is also a reminder of the power of nature and the fragility of life.

The best time to visit is during the summer months when the weather is warm and the water is perfect for swimming.

1. Lake Isabel was created in 1902 when the City of Pueblo dammed the Arkansas River. The lake is named after Isabel Raymond, the daughter of one of Pueblo's early settlers.
2. Lake Isabel is also a popular birding spot, with over 200 species of birds having been spotted at the lake.
3. In addition to the animals that call Lake Isabel home, the lake is also home to a number of shipwrecks.
4. Due to its high elevation, Lake Isabel is often blanketed in snow during the winter months.
5. Lake Isabel is surrounded by mountain peaks, including Pikes Peak to the north and Green Mountain to the south.
6. The first dam was built on Lake Isabel in 1882, and the current dam was built in 1912.

We recommend allowing at least four hours to really see and appreciate all the lake has to offer. Of course, that time frame can be shortened or lengthened depending on your activity level and interests. 

To reach Lake Isabel in Pueblo County, Colorado, take Highway 96 west from Pueblo for about 25 miles. Then turn left (south) onto County Road 1A, which is well-marked. Follow CR 1A for about 8 miles until you reach the lake. The drive takes you through some beautiful scenery, and the lake itself is a great place for fishing, boating, and relaxing. 

While there is no formal entrance fee to explore Lake Isabel, visitors may be asked to pay a small fee to use the facilities or to park their vehicles. 

Lake Isabel is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. The gate to the parking lot is locked at night, so be sure to arrive before dark.
