Red Mountain Pass - 13 Things to Know Before Visiting

Red Mountain Pass is a beautiful area in Ouray County, Colorado. There are plenty of things to do in the area, including hiking, biking, fishing, and camping. The scenery is absolutely stunning, and there are numerous trails to explore. In addition, the area is home to several hot springs, which are perfect for relaxing after a long day of exploring.

The history of Red Mountain Pass dates back to the 19th century, when it was first used by Native Americans as a trade route between the Pacific Coast and the interior of the continent. In 1876, prospectors searching for silver and gold discovered deposits in the San Juans, and soon after a mining boom began in the area. The need for a reliable transportation route to move ore from the mines led to the construction of a wagon road over Red Mountain Pass in 1880. This road became known as the millionaire's highway, because it was used by wealthy mine owners and investors to reach their properties in Ouray County. Today, Red Mountain Pass is still an important transportation route, carrying both tourists and locals alike through some of Colorado's most scenic mountain country.

The best time to visit Ouray County is during the summer months. From June to August, the temperatures are warm and the days are long, perfect for hiking, biking, and picnicking. However, if you're looking to avoid the crowds, autumn is also a great time to visit. 

1. Make sure to pack your hiking shoes! There are dozens of trails to explore, ranging from easy walks to challenging climbs.
2. Stop by one of the many visitor centers to learn more about the area's history and natural attractions.
3. Pack out all trash, including biodegradable items like fruit peels and nutshells.
4. Be aware of your surroundings. There are some steep drop-offs along the road, so it's important to keep an eye on your step.
5. Stop at the overlooks along the way. There are several pull-offs with stunning views of the mountains, so make sure to take advantage of them!
6. Bring cash with you . There are no ATM s at Red Mountain Pass , so it ' s a good idea to have some cash on hand just in case. 

1. The pass is located on the Continental Divide at an elevation of 11,018 feet.
2. It is one of the highest mountain passes in the United States.
3. In 1848, it was used by Mormon settlers as they made their way westward from Utah.
4.  It is a popular stopping point for travelers making their way through southwestern Colorado. 
5. In 1873, prospectors discovered silver and gold in the area, leading to a mining boom in the San Juans.

While there is no official time limit for exploring the pass, most visitors spend at least a few hours taking in the sights. In general, it is recommended that visitors allow at least a full day to explore Red Mountain Pass and its surroundings. 

To reach the pass from Ouray, take Main Street south out of town and follow the signs for U.S. Highway 550. The road will wind its way up the mountain, and you will eventually reach the top of the pass. 

There is no entrance fee to explore this area. 

The pass is open year-round, but access to some areas may be restricted in winter due to snow accumulation. During the summer months, the road is open daily from 8:00 AM. to 8:00 PM.
