Uncompahgre National Forest - 13 Things to Know Before Visiting

Uncompahgre National Forest is a beautiful place to explore and enjoy the outdoors. There are many activities to do in the area including hiking, camping, fishing, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. The Uncompahgre National Forest is a U.S. National forest located in western Colorado. It is named after the Native American tribe that once inhabited the area. The forest covers 1.8 million acres of land and is home to a wide variety of plant and animal life. The forest is also home to several important historical sites, including the birthplace of former President Theodore Roosevelt.

The Uncompahgre National Forest was established in 1908, making it one of the oldest national forests in the United States. It was created in order to protect the watershed of the Uncompahgre River, which is an important source of water for the region. 1.  There are four Wilderness Areas within the forest: Mt Sneffels Wilderness Area, Ambush Pass Wilderness Area, West Elk Wilderness Area, and Lizard Head Wilderness Area.

While it's impossible to see everything in one visit, a week is a good amount of time to get a taste of what the forest has to offer. With careful planning, you can fit in all of the highlights without feeling rushed.

 From Montrose, take Highway 550 south for about 25 miles. You will then see signs for Uncompahgre National Forest and can follow the roads into the forest.

The fee is $5 per vehicle or $30 for an annual pass, and it can be paid at any of the forest Service offices in Montrose County. The pass is valid for one year from the date of purchase and allows unlimited entry to the forest. Although there are some charges for overnight camping and day-use facilities. Picnic areas and boat ramps are also available for a nominal fee. 

The Forest is open year-round for recreation. However, some areas may be closed due to weather conditions or other factors.
