Canyons of the Ancients National Monument is located in southwest Colorado, in Montezuma County. The monument was established in 2000 and covers an area of 176,000 acres. The monument is located on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management, and is open to the public for hiking, camping, and picnicking.

The Canyons of the Ancients National Monument is a beautiful place to visit at any time of year, but there are certain times when the experience is especially enjoyable. April and May are typically the best months to visit, as the wildflowers are in bloom and the temperatures are pleasant. July and August can also be nice, although it can be quite hot during these months. September and October offer another opportunity to see the wildflowers, as well as enjoy milder temperatures. December through February can be cold, but it is also a good time to see the Ruins illuminated by snow.

1. Plan ahead and pack accordingly. There is limited cell phone service in the monument, so it's important to have a map and compass with you. Be sure to wear appropriate shoes and clothing, and bring plenty of water and snacks.
2. Start early. The monument is large, and it can take longer than you think to get from one canyon to another. By starting early, you'll have more time to explore.
3. Be respectful of the land. Canyons of the Ancients is a sacred place for many Native American tribes. Please be respectful of the land and refrain from hiking off-trail or damaging any artifacts.
4. Keep your dogs under control at all times. Dogs are allowed in the monument, but they must be kept on a leash at all times for their safety and the safety of wildlife.
5. Don't miss the opportunity to stargaze in one of the darkest night skies in the country. The Canyons of the Ancients is an excellent place for astrophotography.

2. At least 6,000 distinct structures have been identified in the monument, and the density of archeological remains is the highest of any region in the United States. The vast majority of stone structures in the national monument are from the Ancient Puebloans era.
3. In addition to its archaeological sites, the Canyons of the Ancients region is also known for its petroglyphs.
4. One of the most famous petroglyph panels in the monument is called Cross Canyon Petroglyphs and features more than 100 images carved into the sandstone rocks. 
5. The archeological sites within the monument represent a variety of different cultures, including the Ancestral Puebloans, Fremont people, and Utes.

The monument is a little off the beaten path, but it is well worth the effort to reach it. The best way to get there is to take Highway 491 north from Cortez, Colorado. The monument is about 25 miles from Cortez, and the drive takes about 45 minutes. Once you reach the monument, there are numerous hiking and camping opportunities available.

There is an entrance fee of $5 per person for those aged 16 and over.

The monument is open from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM daily.
