There's no shortage of things to do at Elkhead Reservoir State Park. Wildlife watching is also a popular pastime at the park, as Elkhead is home to a variety of wildlife including elk, deer, bighorn sheep, and eagles. In addition, the park offers stunning views of the Rockies and is a great place to enjoy Colorado's famously beautiful sunsets. 

Elkhead Reservoir State Park is a state park in Moffat County, Colorado. The park is located on the Elkhead Reservoir, which was created by the damming of the Elk River in 1976. The reservoir is a popular spot for fishing, swimming, and boating. The park also features hiking and biking trails, picnicking areas, and a campground. Elkhead Reservoir State Park was established in 1977. The park is named for the nearby Elkhead Reservoir, which was created by the damming of the Elk River in 1976. Elkhead Reservoir State Park is a beautiful place to visit year-round, but the best time to go is during the summer months. From June to August, the average high temperature is in the mid-80s, and the average low is in the low 50s. The days are long, and the nights are short, making it the perfect time to enjoy all that the park has to offer. 

1. Be sure to bring your fishing gear, as there are plenty of fish to be caught in the reservoir.
2. If you're planning on hiking, wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water.
3. The campsites at Elkhead Reservoir State Park are first-come, first-served, so be sure to arrive early if you hope to get a spot.

4. Elkhead Reservoir State Park did not feature potable water as an amenity, though it can be sourced at the nearby Yampa River State Park.

5. Pack plenty of sunscreen and insect repellent. The sun is intense at high altitudes, and there are lots of mosquitoes near the water.

2. The reservoir is stocked with primarily warm water fish species, including largemouth bass, black crappie, and bluegill.
3. The reservoir is used for irrigation, recreation, and as a drinking water source. 
4. There are two campgrounds located within the park.
5. Be aware of wildlife. There are many animals that call Elkhead Reservoir State Park home, so be sure to admire them from a distance and never approach them or attempt to feed them.

There is no official time limit for exploring the park, most visitors spend at least a full day enjoying all that it has to offer. However, for those who want to really experience everything Elkhead Reservoir State Park has to offer, spending a weekend or even longer here is highly recommended.

To get there you take Highway 40 westbound out of Craig for about 28 miles. You will then see the signs for Elkhead Reservoir State park and take a left turn onto County Road 62. The park is about 1/4 mile down on the right hand side.

There is a $7 daily fee or you can purchase an annual pass for $70.
