The Ocala National Forest,is the oldest federally-protected forest east of the Mississippi River. Spanning over 385,000 acres of protected land, this forest is filled with natural springs, over 600 lakes and rivers, trails for hiking and biking, and a variety of wildlife. This 850-acre area is known for its prehistoric fossils and middens, ancient curved sand ridges created by Native Americans thousands of years ago. Seminole State Forest covers 25,812 acres in Central Florida. The forest is accessible via Florida State Road 44, Lake County Road 46A, and Florida State Road 46.
