The Untersberg is a mountain range with an extension of about 70 km² in the southwest of the Flachgau on the border with Bavaria.It is one of the most popular recreational spaces in Salzburg. It is 400 years old and the oldest preserved stately avenue in the world. The total distance is about 2.5 kilometers and is a protected part of the landscape. It was created at the behest of Prince Archbishop Markus Sittikus, who wanted to take the straight route from the city to nature. An impressive 621 trees still line the path, along which there are many stately houses. The avenue is car-free and reserved for walkers, runners and cyclists.
