The McKechnie Institute is located at the intersection of Ailsa Street and Dalrymple Street in the town of Girvan in South Ayrshire. Built in the Scottish Baronial style with some Renaissance detailing, its architects McKissack & Rowan of Glasgow, also designed Girvan's North Parish Church. The ground floor originally contained a library, reading room and ladies room, with a billiards room and a Librarian's house on the first floor.

Girvan is one of Ayrshire's most popular beaches, and the town offers a variety of traditional seaside activities. Girvan Golf Course is one of eight fine courses owned and managed by South Ayrshire Council. Although a municipal course it provides the only golf in Girvan and there is a thriving independent local club with the members having facilities within the municipal clubhouse. Although not of Championship standard, Girvan provides a golfing test of considerable charm and aesthetic pleasure.
