20 Attractions to Explore Near Harborough Museum

Foxton Locks are ten canal locks consisting of two "staircases" each of five locks, located on the Leicester line of the Grand Union Canal about 3 miles west of the Leicestershire town of Market Harborough. They are named after the nearby village of Foxton. As well as the longest and steepest staircase locks in the UK, the site is home to the remains of the inclined plane, a magnificent, if slightly weird, piece of Victorian engineering.

West Lodge Rural Centre is a petting farm with children's activities near Desborough in Northamptonshire. The Carpetbagger Aviation Museum was formed in 1993 for the 50th Anniversary reunion of the USAAF's 801st / 492nd Bomb Group. Displays and exhibits within the museum depict the history of the airfield and vividly show the work carried out by the 801st / 492nd Bomb Group, especially during Operation Carpetbagger, and their secret missions to deliver agents and supplies to resistance groups in Occupied Europe during the Second World War.

This delightful triangular building was designed by Sir Thomas Tresham (father of one of the Gunpowder Plotters) and constructed between 1593 and 1597. Hallaton museum is a situated in a Tin Tab in the heart of rural leicestershire open from Easter until October at weekends and on bank holidays. It is a great asset to the village and well worth a visit should you be in the area. The themes of the exhibition change periodically.

A beautiful eighteenth century house with a park and nineteenth-century garden, on the site of a seventeenth-century house and garden. The Brampton Valley Way is a 14-mile rail-trail built on the way of the former Northampton to Market Harborough Railway in Northamptonshire. There are 14 miles of the park to explore, with woodland spinneys, traditional hedgerows, and ancient meadows throughout. Great Merrible Wood is a 12 hectare nature reserve east of Hallaton in Leicestershire. It is owned and managed by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, and is part of the Eye Brook Valley Woods Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is semi-natural ancient woodland with several unusual herbs, such as broadleaved helleborine, herb paris and violet helleborine. Rockingham Castle is one of the oldest castles in Northamptonshire. William the Conqueror first recognized the strategic importance of the site of Rockingham castle. The castle was in royal hands for over 450 years and was essentially a very regal hunting lodge until the reign of Edward III. It was set in 18 acres of gardens. One of the most prominent garden features is the so-called 'Elephant Hedge', a 400-year-old circular yew hedge that cuts through the 17th-century formal terraced garden.

Eyebrook Reservoir is a jewel hidden in one of the prettiest parts of England. Surrounded by rolling arable fields, pasture land, spruce, pine and willow trees. This large reservoir straddles the border between Leicestershire and Rutland. Access is limited but good views of the northern end are available from the road. It was built between 1937 and 1940 by damming the Eye Brook and the site now covers around 200 hectares.

The Eye Brook is a watercourse in the East Midlands of England and a tributary of the River Welland. It is around 18 miles long. Much of the land surrounding the area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a report by English Nature considered the river to be one of the most "natural" in the county having experienced very little human intervention.

All Saints Church in Brixworth is the largest Saxon church in England, indeed it is probably the largest Anglo-Saxon building of any kind. It was founded around AD 680 by monks from Peterborough, and unlike some early churches, has retained much of its Saxon architecture. It is the largest English church that remains substantially as it was in the Anglo-Saxon era. It was designated as a Grade I listed building in 1954.
