Temple Island is situated a mile and a half downstream of the picturesque market town of Henley-on-Thames, on one of the most beautiful stretches of the River Thames. They were excavated between 1748 and 1752 for Francis Dashwood, 11th Baron le Despencer, founder of the Dilettanti Society and co-founder of the Hellfire Club, whose meetings were held in the caves.

The gallery holds the largest collection of Spencer's works anywhere in the world.
