Experience the history of shamisen and traveling entertainers
Things to know
About the Activity
The shamisen came to mainland Japan in the 16th century and became very popular through the 17th century. Shamisen is one of the traditional musical instruments that feel the soul of Japanese people. But most Japanese have never touched a shamisen or heard its live sound. In particular, only a few dozen people have taken over the singing of "Goze," a blind female traveling entertainer now gone. In this workshop you will learn about the history of the shamisen and the Goze. Furthermore, by listening to the live performance of powerful and rustic Goze song, you can feel a Japan that even Japanese people do not know. And you can take home a handmade mini-shamisen and fill your home with the soul of Japan echoing with its sound!
